Dr. Sagas and Bahati VanPelt met at the University of Florida to discuss VanPelt’s journey as an Athlete Development Specialist. VanPelt has been in the athlete development field for over 20 years, with experience in a variety of different roles that focus on athletes and their time in their respective sport, in addition to their career transitions.
VanPelt dove into his past, from his time as a student at FAU and Flagler College, to his time as the Chief of Athlete Services for the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee (USOPC) two decades later. VanPelt worked with the Jacksonville Jaguars, focusing on youth football and communications, as well as serving as the Executive Director of The Trust, powered by the NFLPA.
Throughout the podcast, VanPelt focused on providing advice for young and aspiring Athlete Development Specialists. He also talked about the skills that are necessary for success as a specialist and areas within the industry that need improvement for the future. He emphasized the importance of building personal relationships, being able to admit when you make a mistake, and most importantly, how to manage people at different levels of the organization.
